Paper Styles
A print is only as good as the paper it is on, which is why it is important to understand the different types available. For my prints, I only offer these few paper types as I find they do the best job at conveying the subtle details of the photos I take. Some prints only come in a subset of these styles if I feel the image would not look correct on a particular paper.
Canvas Gallery Wrap
Images are printed directly onto canvas material, wrapped over a 1.5” frame, and then laminated with a matte finish. This is the best option if you want something that stands out and has a physical texture that resembles a painting.
Another benefit of purchasing this style is receiving an image that is ready to hang on your wall immediately with no additional matting, framing, or stretching.
Fine Art Print
Prints with this option are done on either Glossy or Textured Matte papers by Hahnemühle. For the exact paper I use, contact me.
The borders on these prints vary by size. Most sizes will have at least a 1” border on the top, left, and right. The bottom side has a little extra to leave room for my signature. Open Edition prints will have only a small border to help with matting, or will sometimes be borderless. See the “Fine Art Paper Sizes” section below for more detail.
Canvas Loose Print
This is the same as the Canvas Gallery Wrap option, but comes as a loose canvas in a roll. This is a great option if you want the painting look of canvas but want to hang it some other way. Additionally, these prints can still be matted and framed like a normal photo if you are okay with losing a tiny slice of the image on each side.
These are full bleed (borderless) prints, so do not buy these with the intention of stretching them onto a frame yourself as you will lose a significant part of the image. Instead, choose this option if you want more “bang for you buck” in terms of print size per dollar compared to the Canvas Gallery Wrap.
Fine Art Paper Sizes
I generally use standard frame sizes to make it easier to get the print on your wall. When choosing print options, you’ll see two sizes listed for Fine Art Prints. The first size refers to the physical dimensions of the paper you will receive. The second size is the area of the printed image. For example, let’s look at:
16” x 20” Fine Art Print (actual image ~13.5” x 18”)
You will receive a piece of paper measuring 16” by 20” with a 13.5” x 18” image in the middle. This means you can drop this piece of paper directly into any 16” x 20” frame and be ready to hang it. Note that the image will not be perfectly centered on the paper, which is purposeful to leave room for the signature at the bottom for Fine Art Prints. Using a frame dimension larger than the paper is recommended with a mat opening of the full paper dimension. For this example, a 20” x 24” frame would be perfect. To hide the signature, you can use a custom sized mat that fits the inner image dimensions. As an alternative to framing, you could also consider poster hanging bars.
Some images are printed full bleed (borderless) if there is already a lot of white at the edge of the image or to better utilize the paper area of a small print.
None of this applies to the canvas options. For those, the size listed is the size of the image on your wall.
Signing Prints
All Limited Edition prints will be signed, but Open Edition prints (usually the smaller sizes) will not be. Because of this, the Open Edition prints arrive quicker as I ship directly to you.
Where and how I sign the prints varies between the paper types. For each print, the signature is placed on the…
Canvas Gallery Wrap
… bottom edge such that it is invisible unless looking from the bottom
Canvas Loose Print
… back of the print at the bottom
Fine Art Print
… front border as initials, below the image on the right side
For all limited edition prints, a certificate of authenticity is included upon request at any time. These will also have the edition number and title on the back.
